MOS is more than a society of birders. As our bylaws state, we’re want to further educational, scientific, and charitable pursuits relating to birdlife in Maryland. This includes conservation.

Please consider joining the Conservation committee to take an active role in conservation, whether that be by participation on the committee or contacting government officials to share your concerns and ideas on conservation related issues.

To assist MOS members in expanding their horizons and take an active role in the conservation of birds and bird habitats, we provide the following short list of organizations with whom we work closely [CHECK THIS LIST}. You may choose to join their mailing lists for timely email alerts. Please keep in mind that the views represented by these organizations are not necessarily those of the MOS, its Executive Board, or the  Board of Directors.

Maryland League of Conservation Voters  (MLCV) serves as the political voice of the state’s environmental community by advocating for sound conservation policies, promoting environmentally responsible candidates, and holding elected officials accountable through scorecards and reports. MLCV supported such issues as protecting Program Open Space, and supporting the Stormwater Management and the Clean Cars Acts.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation fights for strong and effective laws and regulations to protect and restore the Bay. They work cooperatively with government, business and citizens and will use legal means to force compliance with local laws. For example, the CBF lead a successful grassroots fight to preserve a large portion of sensitive land in Dorchester County (adjacent to the Little Blackwater River and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge) proposed for intensive residential and commercial development, known as the Blackwater Resort Communities.

Audubon’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habits for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. Issues are addressed at the state and local level.
