The Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) will award five ecology or ornithology scholarships to Maryland teachers and naturalists for summer workshops at the National Audubon Society’s camp on Hog Island in Maine. Each award covers the cost of tuition, room and board for an extensive six-day course of study and instruction in ornithology, ecology, conservation, and natural history. Travel arrangements and costs are the recipient’s responsibility; however there will be a modest travel stipend of up to $300 available to applicants who request it.
Five scholarships will be awarded for 2024. These workshop selections are listed on the 2024 Scholarship Choices document.
Scholarship recipients must work with young people in Maryland. Teachers, camp counselors, park rangers, naturalists, and others who make nature education a part of their careers are eligible. Applicants need not be members of MOS, but must be endorsed by a chapter officer or a member of MOS. Please refer to 2024 Scholarship Fact Sheet for more information
If you are approached by an applicant for a recommendation, you will (from the Scholarship Fact Sheet) “contact the applicant to discuss their interests and background and then write a recommendation. It is very helpful if the letters of recommendation cite specific and relevant activities, accomplishments, or projects in which the applicant was involved, in addition to personal qualifications.”
