MOS Sponsored Birding Trips

The MOS is launching a new member benefit: birding trips to some of the great hotspots in the world. We’ll concentrate on the Americas right now, but we can expand to anywhere members might wish. And your wishes are important. If there is a spot you’ve always wanted to visit, let us know. We’ll do our best to gather enough like-minded birders to make the trip viable. But for these inaugural trips we’ll stick closer to home.

2019 Trips

This trip was to Cuba from November 9 to 16, 2019. It started in Havana and from there explored pristine protected areas, including La Güira National Park, Las Terrazas Biosphere Reserve, and several sites within Zapata Swamp, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This trip was limited to 12 participants and the cost was $3,065 per person double occupancy, with a $495 single room supplement. Airfare was not included.

2020 Trips

Several other great trips on the calendar for the spring of 2020.

January 25-29, 2020

Only to a birder does a long weekend away in the middle of winter to northern Minnesota seem like a good idea. But this birding experience delivers through-the-roof quality. The boreal forests in winter are home to birds like Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Bohemian Waxwing, Evening Grosbeak, Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Spruce Grouse. This trip, run by Red Hill Birding on behalf of the Maryland Ornithological Society, is designed to take in the best birding that Northeast Minnesota offers in winter. We will visit the world-famous Sax-Zim Bog, the forests of Superior National Forest, and the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is next on the travel calendar. From March 17 to 25, 2020, we will join Mario Cordoba of Crescentia Expeditions for a 9-day tour of Central Costa Rica including the Central Valley, Caribbean Foothills, Central Pacific Transitional Pacific Forest, and the Central & Southern Highlands. Mario has introduced many Maryland birders to the wonders of Costa Rica. Everyone returns with happy memories and amazing life lists. The trip is limited to 10 people and the cost is $1900 double occupancy, with a $500 single supplement. Airfare is not included.
