Frederick Bird Club meetings are normally held the first Thursday of each month beginning at 7:00 PM. This year we will meet at Homewood at Crumland Farms (7407 Willow Road) in Frederick, except in May. If Frederick County schools are closed for inclement weather, we will not meet. Please contact leaders by 5 PM the day before trips to confirm when and where to meet.

September 6 – MEETING. Joe Hanfman will tell us about the wonders of Alaska birding.

September 15 – ASCM NATURE WALK – Audrey Carroll (Monarch tagging).

September 22 – GAMBRILL STATE PARK and FREDERICK WATERSHED. Search for migrating fall warblers. Easy walking on mostly paved paths. Leader: Lois Kauffman (301-845-6690).

September 29 – OAKS LANDFILL. This restricted access area is a large inactive landfill adjacent to Blue Mash, with open fields and some surprisingly productive ponds. Mark England will lead a search for rarities and early migrants. Mostly driving with frequent stops. Contact: Deb Calhoun (410-215-3268).


October 4– MEETING. Mike Welch returns to the club to tell us about the birds and mammals of Tanzania.

October 13 – LILYPONS/GREENFIELD ROAD. Local morning search for migrants and early waterfowl. A great trip for beginners as well as experienced birders. Trails can be uneven and overgrown. Leader: David Smith (410-549-7082).

October 20 – ASCM NATURE WALK – Fred Archibald.

October 27 – SAW-WHET OWL BANDING. Late night trip. Reservations are required and the number of participants is limited on this special night-time trip to the Saw-Whet Owl banding station at Lamb’s Knoll. Rain date October 28. Contact Tom Humphrey for information and reservations (240-793-2508).


November 1 – MEETING. Murray Bakst will speak on “Bird Sex and Breeding”.

November 10 or 11 – LOCAL HAWK WATCH. Tom Humphrey (240-793-2508) will lead a search for migrating hawks. Date and location dependent on weather conditions.

November 17 – ASCM NATURE WALK – Audrey Carroll.


December 6 – HOLIDAY DINNER AND MEETING. Wil Hershberger will be our featured speaker, on “A Celebration of Birdsong”. Dinner will be at Homewood at 6:00 P.M. We will also hold our fantastic silent auction. Please make reservations with and send money to Treasurer Grace Borell before 11/20/2017. Make checks payable to FBC.

December 8 – BLACKWATER NWR. Search for wintering waterfowl at Maryland’s premier wildlife refuge. Mostly driving with frequent stops. Scopes helpful. Leader: Kathy Calvert (301-810-5677).

December 16 – CATOCTIN CHRISTMAS COUNT #66. Birders of all ages and levels of experience needed! If you can’t be in the field, but live within 7.5 miles of Thurmont, help by counting and reporting your feeder birds. Backup date December 29. Compiler: Kathy Brown (301-865-1369).

December 30 – SUGARLOAF CHRISTMAS COUNT. All are welcome! If you can’t be in the field, but live within 7.5 miles of Sugarloaf peak, help by counting and reporting your feeder birds. FBC Coordinator: Helen Horrocks (301-831-6315).


January 3 – MEETING. Orietta Estrada will share “Orietta’s Big Year”.

January 5 – AUDREY Carroll Mid-Winter Count. Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:30 AM, and be prepared to visit all parts of the sanctuary’s 129 acres. You may want your waterproof boots. Compiler: David Smith (410-549-7082).

January 13 – FRED Archibald Mid-Winter Count. Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:30 AM, and be ready to cover 140 acres. Don’t forget waterproof boots. Compiler: David Smith (410-549-7082).

January 26 – FREDERICK COUNTY MID -WINTER COUNT. This is the last, but not the least, of our winter counts! The reward afterwards is the enjoyable tally-rally at David and Carol’s house. Compiler: David Smith (410-549-7082).

February 15-18 – GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT. Count one day or all four!

February 16-18 – EASTERN SHORE WEEKEND. A casual and fun trip to visit some of the best birding spots on the east coast. Leader Tom Humphrey (240-793-2508).

March 2 – BLACK HILLS RESERVOIR. Bald Eagles and over-wintering waterfowl. Leader: David Smith (410-549-7082).

March 7 – MEETING. John McCann will speak on dragonflies and damselflies.

April 4 – MEETING. Phil Davis will speak on “Chasing the Endemics of the Canary Islands and Cape Verde”.

April 6 – NORTH POINT STATE PARK and BLACK MARSH. Explore two beautiful adjacent sites on the Chesapeake Bay. Black Marsh is a wild and natural Nature Conservancy property. Leader: Kathy Calvert (301-810-5677).

April 27 (tentative)– NATIVE PLANT SALE of the Audubon Society of Central Maryland, held at the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary. Please support this sale at one of our favorite and most productive birding hot spots. More information can be found at

April 28 – C&O CANAL/SHEPHERDSTOWN. Spring wildflowers and early migrants. Leader: Lois Kauffman (301-845-6690).


May 2 – MEETING (Location TBD) Ron Kaltenbaugh will speak about “The Effect of Climate Change on Bird Life”.

May 4 – PENNYFIELD LOCK TO RILEYS LOCK ON THE CANAL. Look for migrants and our returning warm weather feathered friends.

May 5 – FRED Archibald May Count. Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:00 AM. Coordinator: David Smith (410-549-7082).

May 11 – FREDERICK COUNTY MAY COUNT #55. It’s peak migration so this is the most fun you can have working on a census. Lots of eyes and ears are needed! Compiler: David Smith (410-549-7082).

June 6 – ANNUAL PICNIC. Our favorite spot for this event is Pinecliff Park where there is a lovely pavilion just in case we have a bit of rain. Bring binoculars, a dish to share, plate, utensils and drink. We’ll meet at 6:00 PM to eat and then do some birding.

June 15-16 – WESTERN MD OVERNIGHT TRIP. Search for rare Golden-winged Warblers, Henslow’s Sparrow and other specialties among the beautiful Western Maryland mountains. Leader: Lois Kauffman (301-845-6690).
