The Least Tern is the smallest tern, often seen flying low over the water, with quick deep wingbeats and shrill cries. The Least Tern usually hovers before plunging into water for tiny prey, and hovers more than most terns. Least Tern populations are endangered in many areas because of human impacts on beaches, which are common nesting areas.
