Explore Days Cove by Canoe!

May 5 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Host:

Baltimore Bird Club

Leader: Sam Tillman, sam.tillman@gmail.com.

Description:

There is nothing like the experience of birding by boat and slipping into the natural habitat. Usually closed to the public, Days Cove sits at the confluence of the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls, which form the only true delta in Baltimore County. The habitat is a forested wetland with abundant coves, providing opportunities to see Marsh Wrens, Least Bitterns, Rails, and other wetland specialties. We’ll be joined by Joe Davis, BCPS science educator, who will share information on the local geology and ecosystem. The trip will start at the Days Cove Environmental Education Center where canoes and lifejackets will be provided. No experience is necessary, but participants must be at least 12 years old to join us. Hats, sunscreen, insect repellent, and layered clothes are recommended as we’ll be on open water for around 2.5hrs. In case of light rain or strong winds we’ll make this a walking trip, but there will be no rain date for the trip (the trip leader will be in contact with all participants that week to confirm it’s happening). Plan to be at the entrance gate between 7:30-8:00am, gates close at 8am, and will be reopened when we wrap up. NOTE: We ask attendees to donate $10 to the Phoenix Wildlife Center, a fantastic local wildlife rehabilitation facility, as thanks for opening the Days Cove property to the bird club. This donation can be made in advance or the trip leader can collect it and make the donation. LIMIT OF 18 PARTICIPANTS.
