Young Birders

Young Birders

YMOS is a subgroup of the Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) and was established to make the world of birds accessible to school age youth. The group supports youth birding throughout the State of Maryland by:

  • Facilitating communication among youth birders throughout the State
  • Providing opportunities for young birders to get started in birding and to help develop their skills
  • Providing educators with resources and opportunities to implement programs

Getting Started

YMOS is a subgroup of the Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) and was established to make the world of birds accessible to school age youth. The group supports youth birding throughout the State of Maryland by:

Birding Basics

In your front yard, backyard, on your way to work, in the woods, and even in the city – birds are everywhere. Whether you’re a birding beginner looking for your first pair of binoculars, a novice in search of a youth field trip,  or a more experienced birder searching for tips on identification, we will get you started.

Educational Resources

YMOS is also interested in involving educators in the world of birds. Birds are probably the best bioindicators of the quality of the environment. Species diversity and changes in bird populations give us a close glimpse into larger environmental changes that may be occurring. Changes in migration also give us a look at the impact of global warming on the natural world.

YMOS Trips & Events

YMOS runs a series of Birding Trips throughout the year in addition to those that might be offered by the local chapters. These trips are always listed and coordinated on the YMOS Facebook page as well as listed on this website. For each trip we need parents that can drive. Parents and family members are always welcome. Binoculars and field guides can always be provided for participants. These trips are open to any young birders in Maryland.

World Series of Birding

Each year YMOS sends at least one team into competition at the World Series of Birding in Cape May, N.J. This competition is one of the premier ornithological events in the world and attracts some of the best birders around. Our team participates in the youth competition. The event is actually primarily a major fundraiser for bird conservation and research; so, although competitive, learning and sharing are paramount.
